Bite-sized Learning - The Future of Learning?!

Updated: Jun 25, 2021

Were you taught that learning new things and developing your career depended on how much time you invested in them? Then it's time to rethink!

Experts agree that it is not the amount of time invested that determines how successful our learning efforts are, but rather how we learn. Short learning units with high relevance to the learner lead to much better results than long, broad sessions with little relevance. The method of bite-sized learning answers precisely to these facts: New information is conveyed in condensed and memory-friendly portions, allowing the learner to effectively take in information in a sustainable way.

That’s good news for all those who used to complain that a lack of time was keeping them from their personal and professional development!

Why Bite-sized Learning is the future of professional development

Bite-sized learning is not only much more convenient than conventional learning methods, it is also significantly more effective. Short personalized learning units are much more fertile - and more fun. This has been scientifically proven. Two components are of particular importance:

Individual relevance When it comes to teaching, many choose the “one-size-fits-all” approach to cater to as many listeners as possible. This is unfortunate. While it does guarantee a certain overall relevance, it inevitably fails to satisfy the individual needs of the listeners. This, in turn, causes the brain to waste its resources on processing unnecessary information, leading to mental exhaustion and a dwindling ability to identify and store what might actually be useful. If, however, only relevant information is conveyed right from the start, it is much easier for us to stay committed and internalize the input in a natural and sustainable way.

Individual attention span

There is a scientific consensus that our attention span is a lot shorter than often assumed. Simply working longer on a task will therefore be of little avail. On the contrary, it can even have a negative effect on your receptiveness, causing boredom, mental fatigue or stress - all of which prevent a favorable learning experience.

An infant’s attention span rarely exceeds 10 to 15 minutes and doesn’t improve much with age. Studies suggest that adults are capable of performing focused mental work for about 30 to 45 minutes. That’s it!

Bite-sized learning takes our innate attention span into account and focuses on short but intensive learning sessions in which our brain can fully process and incorporate what is important. This way, our interest is sustained throughout the entire learning unit and the imparted knowledge can be firmly anchored in our brain.
